Depression, I have noticed, can come in many forms. Some of these forms are typical and some are not as noticeable as others. When many imagine depression, they often simply imagine sadness. However, this piece covers a less visible side of depression. It aims to emulate depression as a manipulative force, often disguised as self-care or seemingly healthy coping mechanisms. Depression can present itself as a comfortable space, which keeps one safe from the outside world in order to further cement itself with the resulting isolation. The parasitical force of depression can convince many to avoid social interaction as well as professional and educational endeavors purely to further itself. I wanted to create a space which uses light, sound, and video to keep viewers in a comfortable trance-like state which prevents them from feeling any desire to leave the installation. I created this environment with the hopes of bringing awareness to others who might not understand that those who face this side of depression aren’t lazy or lacking commitment But are rather being manipulated by a force which is out of their control. I also hope to create clarity for those who might struggle with this issue and do not realize it.
