Formspace is a simple comic I've begun to create first and foremost as an exercise in comic making. At the moment I am in the creation process of a larger and more complex webcomic, which will also include music. However, I did not want to delve into that process without any experience with the basic structure and process of comic development and creation. And so, I've created this as groundwork which the other comic will build on top of. In a way, it is like the scaffolding of the comic realm that will exist above it, a nested world beneath the surface, "as above so below".
You might be wondering why it's partially in Chinese. This is because at the moment I am now focusing my presence on Xiaohongshu, which has a largely Chinese audience. And so, I wanted to challenge myself to create a comic which does not rely on language and to be understood. I have found a lot of difficulties in translating certain idea's into Chinese because each language itself is shaped so much around existing cultural conventions. And because so much of my work revolves around selfhood from a western and individualist originating perspective, I thought my ideas might be best expressed without the limitation of language entirely. As an artist, I think all conventions must be challenged in order to find the true unity between us all. A unity that transcends our respective cultures, and connects collectives with their common humanity while retaining what makes them unique. And that is the aim of formspace.
